Hairspray The Broadway Musical now playing at Laguna Playhouse

I am so excited to tell you about Hairspray: The Broadway Musical, playing at the Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach through July 30th. I was first exposed to this musical in 2007 when I saw the movie “Hairspray” which is based on this musical. I couldn’t wait to see the musical live on stage! I guarantee that you will not only love the message in the film but you will also love the amazing soundtrack! The musical brought the movie to life for me and did not disappoint. The thing I loved the most about the musical was the message behind – to include integration for the black population in the 1960’s when segregation was still prevalent. It’s a wonderful message of inclusion and appreciation for a culture that has long been discriminated against in our country.

The show takes place in 1962 Baltimore and follows the big, bold heroine Tracy Turnblad who dreams to be on a dancing television program for teens. She twists, ponys and mash potatoes her way to Baltimore stardom all while fighting for integration on a local TV dance show. The characters in this musical are so animated and each one plays a unique role. For example, Tracy’s mother Edna is traditionally played by a male character and it truly adds comedy to the musical. Then there’s Link Larkin who is Tracy’s crush on the TV dance show. She has the biggest crush on him and imagines the day they will get married. There’s also Penny Lou Pingleton who is Tracy’s best friend that follows Tracy on all her adventures and even finds love for herself. There really is something for everyone in this musical. Hairspray is a winner of eight Tony awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. It has spectacular songs, energetic dancing and an uplifting story for all ages.

I highly enjoyed attending the opening night of Hairspray: The Broadway Musical because of all the small perks such as a complimentary dessert table after the performance and complimentary champagne. The theatre was sold out that night and the applauses after each song were very loud. I would recommend this musical to teenagers and up because little ones might not be able to sit through an entire two hour show. I liked that they split the two acts into a longer first act and a shorter second act. The first act was about an hour and a half long and the second act about thirty minutes.

There are some amenities you can enjoy at the Laguna Playhouse such as a photo booth when you enter as well as a backdrop to take a photo with your guest in front of a Hairspray sign. There are plenty of volunteers as well who can help you take pictures. There is also a bar inside where you can purchase drinks that include beer and wine and desserts such as brownies and cookies. Parking is $20 in their structure however you may be able to find street parking or metered parking surrounding the theatre. We were able to park on the street about a block away and it didn’t cost us a dime. Please do read street signs however to make sure you are able to park for free in a zone that allows it.
