Scrat is back for more painfully funny adventures in Ice Age 5: Collision Course. The film takes us right back to Scrat’s acorn loving antics. In the end of Ice Age 4 we were given a glimpse into the future which, not surprisingly, leads Scrat into outer space. The persistent saber-tooth squirrel is always getting into catastrophic problems that cause so many problems for the rest of the Ice Age gang.
We were invited to Discovery Cube to get a special sneak peak of Ice Age 5: Collision Course. It was such a great treat to meet the films director, Galen Chu and story artist, Jony Chandra. We got an insiders look at what it takes to create such a long standing animation series.
We got the scoop on making the film – from researching asteroids and using color to enhancing the feel of being in outer space. It was interesting how they used the color purple in the mammoths mane or Scrat’s space craft to create the ambiance of it being from space.
This film took extra care in the research because there are meteors and cosmic changes, and they all affect the outcome of the Ice Age herd. UCLA solar expert professor Abby Kavner was on hand to explain and show us all about meteors and asteroid belt. The kids were so excited when she brought out some of the oldest meteors and then let the kids touch them. Definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity for them.
Discovery Cube was the perfect spot to screen the movie because of all the space exhibits. The kids had the chance to build a space shuttle with LEGOs and learn about outer space at the Planetary Research Station. All this space talk just got them more excited about watching Ice Age 5:Collision Course!
The kids had a blast checking out the new Mission Control site (check it out now at http://www.iceagemissioncontrol.com
We walked away from the event with a copy of Ice Age 5: Collision Course to watch as soon as we got home. The kids were really excited because they have seen all the previous Ice Age movies way more than once.
I loved sitting back and listening to the bursts of laughter and “rewind that scene.” Now your little ones can also enjoy this crazy adventure that the Ice Age herd is put into because of Scrat’s acorn obsession. Ice Age 5: Collision Course is out on Blu-ray and DVD, and with five extra featurettes it will definitely ensure hours of entertainment.
We spent the rest of our visit at Discovery Cube checking out all the fun exhibits. As always, we had a great time!
