I was berry excited to attend Knott’s Berry Farm’s Media Preview Tasting Event showcasing the 2017 Knott’s Boysenberry Festival tasting line-up last week! Oh my goodness, the spread they had was all amazing! Knott’s Berry Farm is the birthplace of the boysenberry. Each Spring, Knott’s celebrates the historic berry during the Knott’s Boysenberry Festival with unique food and live entertainment.
For the first time ever, the mouth-watering festival is expanding to three weeks, April 1–April 23. During the festival Knott’s will have extended hours from 10am to 10pm allowing guests extra time to take advantage of all of the limited-time offerings. This is one festival you will not want to miss!
As soon as I arrived, we were invited into Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner restaurant where we enjoyed some warm, fluffy biscuits with boysenberry jam and boysenberry butter and washed it down with some sweet boysenberry punch. As I scarfed down my biscuit, I enjoyed listening to the history of how it all started for the Knott’s family. The dedication both Walter and Cordelia Knott showed is very inspirational. Walter Knott never gave up on his dream and Cordelia Knott never gave up on him and as a team, with their children, they built this amazing empire we are able to enjoy today, Knott’s Berry Farm.
This year, in honor of the famous berry, Ghost Town’s Town Hall will feature a fascinating film which shares the story of how Walter and Cordelia Knott settled here in Buena Park and helped the world discover the amazing boysenberry. Exclusively during the festival, guests can pull up a seat and catch a 10-minute showing of the historic film.

After our history lesson, we were escorted into the Wilderness Dance Hall where it was transformed, complete with different tasting stations…I didn’t know where to begin! I had no specific plan, I wanted to try everything, what better way to start than with dessert! I jumped right into the chocolate covered boysenberry cheesecake on a stick. The chocolate was so decadent but the star was the creamy boysenberry cheesecake.
As I was finishing up my cheesecake, I saw a rush to the pizza station. New to the boysenberry festival this year, the boysenberry pizza made with arugula and goat cheese is a must-try item. I must admit, I am not a huge fan of pizza, but this pizza was one I could eat every time.
I enjoyed all the wine pairings each station had with every food item just like they will have as part of the festival. Located inside of Ghost Town’s Wilderness Dance Hall, the Wine and Craft Brew Garden will offer 4 craft brews and over 50 different wines from 36 producers including boysenberry beer and boysenberry wine. A convenient tasting card is available for only $25, which includes 6 tastings paired with snacks. The Boysenberry Festival Tasting Card can be purchased at Sutters Grill, Pemmican Pickle, the Calico Saloon, the Churro Factory, the Berry Stand at the entrance of Ghost Town, the Ghost Town Bakery and at the Gold Trails Hotel.
From the delicious entrée dishes such as the boysenberry pulled pork sandwich, the crispy deep-fried alligator bites paired with farm-made zesty boysenberry aioli, finger-lickin boysenberry BBQ wings, savory boysenberry meatballs, my favorite dish was the boysenberry BBQ pork short ribs with jasmine rice. It was delightful and the sweetness from the boysenberry worked perfectly with the short ribs. I wish I was able to bring along a guest because there was so much food and much more dishes I wanted to try! By the end of the evening, I was stuffed.
Other must-try items in the mouth-watering line-up of the boysenberry inspired dishes are the unforgettable and delicious new ravioli dish packed with boysenberry flavors, freshly baked boysenberry fry bread and lip-smacking corn on the cob with boysenberry butter and mayo, each dish will leave guests wanting more.
Then there’s the now legendary delicious Fun Bun. It’s a warm, fried cinnamon roll with a sweet gooey boysenberry cream cheese topping. It’s a one-of-a-kind treat that you’ll be craving the entire year! Other sweet boysenberry desserts Boysenberry ICEE Floats, Boysenberry Latte, and new to the festival this year are boysenberry nutella crepes.
There are many boysenberry inspired dishes and drinks that will surely leave your palate yearning for more. Guests who want to take home a piece of boysenberry heaven are able to do so by stopping by the Berry Market located in the California MarketPlace and General Store located in Ghost Town. Select items are available to purchase at the online Berry Market store.
Along with the boysenberry inspired dishes are boysenberry products that guests are able to purchase throughout the Old West at the Crafts Fair during the festival. Some items include boysenberry soap, rock candy and their boysenberry lip balm. It not only moisturizes your lips, its tastes just like boysenberry too! You’ll be licking your lips the entire day, I know I did!
The Boysenberry Festival is included with admission to Knott’s Berry Farm however, there is an additional cost for food tasting experiences within the event. Enjoy a full day of thrilling coasters, family fun rides and amazing and rare food and drinks.
