The first ever Paella Wine & Beer Festival in Orange County is coming to the OC Fairgrounds on August 26th from 4pm-9pm!!! We’re so excited to attend this event because it’s promises to offer UNLIMITED paella, wine and beer! You can also expect there to be live entertainment including Flamenco dancing and Spanish rock. Vendors will set-up to offer additional food for purchase, art and other goods similar to a Spanish open-air market. The cost for this event is varies and may be purchased online at http://www.eventslanding.com. A portion of all ticket sales will benefit the non-profit organization, Canica USA, which grants wishes, such as trips to Disneyland, to impoverished children living with cancer in Mexico and South America!!! It’s a win-win.
If you are not familiar with paella, it is one of Spain’s most popular dishes which is a main dish usually shared with many people. Its ingredients include rice, saffron, chicken, seafood and several vegetables to name a few. It is cooked in a shallow pan and can serve a very large amount of people depending on how large your paella pan is.
At the preview event that took place at the Villa Roma restaurant in Laguna Hills, we learned that Chef Leo Razo will be in attendance at the Paella Festival and will break a record by creating the nation’s largest paella ever that is expected to feed 3,000 people. We were able to sample his paella at the preview event and some of the ingredients he added to the paella were shrimp, clams, asparagus, bell peppers, onions, sausage, steak and chicken. I liked the paella because it was not too salty. They also served vegetarian paella so don’t be discouraged if you don’t eat meat as there will be vegetarian options at the festival. The paella took about 30 minutes to prepare and less than an hour to cook (it served about 50 people). I loved being able to see the preparation of the paella and to be able to try out the finished product.
We also had the opportunity to try appetizers while the paella cooked. Some of the items featured were cheese and crackers, meats, onion rings, cheese ravioli and tomato with basil and cheese. My favorite appetizer was the jamon serrano which is a smoked ham that can be eaten alone or with some bread. It is another one of Spain’s signature foods and quite delicious!
I also would like to mention that another popular dish from Spain is the Spanish tortilla which is sort of an egg omelet with potatoes and onion mixed in and shaped like a tortilla. You can eat it alone or in a sandwich just like the jamon serrano. You will have to go to the festival to see if they will serve this dish that day! The Paelle Wine & Beer Festival is not only going to showcase Spanish food but some Spanish culture as well. I think festivals like these are important to Orange County because it features a culture that we can all appreciate and learn more about.
Not only will there be Spanish food at the event, there will also be wine, cocktails, beer and sangria. The drinks will be from the Spanish and Baja regions. I highly recommend the sangria as that is a featured Spanish drink that is made with red wine and some sort of fruit juice or whole fruit. Sometimes it includes orange juice or brandy. Sometimes it is made with white wine. It just depends on who makes it, but I usually drink the one with red wine as it has a deep, rich flavor to it.
I hope you are able to make it to the Paella Wine & Beer Festival and that you will experience the rich Spanish culture and it’s various traditions.
