My step-daughter, Aalyssa and I attended opening night of RENT and enjoyed some Mommy and daughter time on our girls night out.
We arrived an hour before showtime and since I’ve seen a couple shows now at Segerstrom, I’ve made it a tradition to take a photo at the fun photo opp that they set up for each performance. Don’t forget to take your photo, it’s located on the 2nd floor.
They also have a signature cocktail for each show. There is usually one that appeals to those who like their cocktails sweeter and those who like a stronger kick. I like my cocktail sweeter so the “Tune up” was the one I decided on. Meanwhile, Aalyssa enjoyed a refreshing Shirley Temple with extra maraschino cherries.
This was my first time seeing RENT, and have never seen the movie so I wasn’t too familiar with the story. Thus, I didn’t know it contained some mature topics. Considering RENT highlighted some of these adult material with grace and tastefulness, my mature 11 year old was able to enjoy the musicality without distracting from the underlining message behind RENT.
See RENT’s 20th anniversary tour at Segerstrom Center for the Arts for a limited time only from January 6-8th.
In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway…and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world.
RENT is the winner of the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It is one of only five musicals to win both awards.
The RENT 20th Anniversary Tour is produced by Work Light Productions, whose other touring productions include Cinderella, MAMMA MIA! (which I saw and was amazing too), Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Vocalosity and Crazy For You.
RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.
What better way to teach an inspiring message of never giving up on your dreams than by taking my 11 year old step-daughter, Aalyssa? When I told her that I’d be taking her to opening night, she could not contain her excitement! Join us as we see RENT for our first time!
