The hubby and I attended an advanced screening at Walt Disney Studios of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” In full disclosure I only went because the hubby wanted to go. I like Star Wars but would not consider myself a fan. I am more of a chick flick girl. The ones where the girl and guy live happily ever after. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story proved me wrong. Chick flicks are about the heroine saving the day at the end.
We can all recall that famous sequence at the begging of “A New Hope.” Where it states that a group of rebel fighters have stolen the plans for the Death Star. Did you ever wonder who and how they stole those plans? This is where Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes in. A group of rebel fighters led by Jyn Orso (Felicity Jones) and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) have been given the task of getting the Death Star plans. In Star Wars fashion Jyn Orso is a strong female character. She is a normal girl who is forced into a bad situation. Jyn and Cassian are rounded out by K-250. A 7’1″ droid that offers the comedic relieve in between all the intense fighting.
The second reason I agreed to see Rogue One was Diego Luna. I had read that he would be part of the cast. Diego Luna is an amazing Mexican actor with many accomplishments in his repertoire. I was happily surprised that he was the leading male for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Finally! A Mexican cast as something other than a cholo or drug dealer. Diego Luna’s role and performance will show that contrary to popular belief, Mexicans are more than stereotypes.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story had me emotionally invested after the first ten minutes. I fell in love with Jyn Orso and her backstory. She will have you rooting for her the whole way. Her character goes to show that woman can lead and be “bad asses.” Half way through Rogue One: A Star Wars Story I whispered to the hubster, “I am really liking it.” I do not know who was more shocked.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a movie made for the generation of teenagers that fell in love with first ones, but this does not mean that newbies like me cannot love it also. This is what makes Rogue One: A Star Wars Story special. Hard core Star Wars fan will appreciate the backstory. Newbies will fall in love with the characters and not miss a beat. Trust me… the long lines will be worth it.
